John Montgomery

Clerk of Works

John Montgomery (born c. 1863) was originally a joiner in Glasgow, who worked his way up to becoming a clerk of works, or building inspector ensuring quality of workmanship and materials. The son of a stationary (as opposed to 'locomotive') engine-keeper, Montgomery grew up in Tradeston, and by 1881 was working as a joiner. By 1905, he appears in the Glasgow Post Office Directory as a clerk of works for the first time, living in Langside Road, Govanhill. 1 By 1911 he had disappeared from the directories. 2 By 1891, he was married with two daughters. 3
