Barr & Knox

James Barr was a civil engineer, surveyor and valuator living in Bridge of Weir, with an office at 17 Hope Street from 1874. Alexander Knox, measurer, is listed as working with him from the following year, and they had set up in partnership as Barr & Knox by 1877, at 132 West Regent Street. In 1882, Knox became a member of the Glasgow Institute of Measurers. By 1891, the firm's offices had moved to 221 West George Street and by 1893 they had added 'assessors of fire losses' to their company description.

At the turn of the century, Barr and Knox seem to have parted ways. Barr remained at the West George Street office with the same company description but now in partnership with John Fyfe F.S.I. Knox set up in business with William Robb F.S.I. as measurers, property surveyors and valuators at Mercantile Chambers, 53 Bothwell Street. 1
