The work carried out for Miss Catherine (Kate) Cranston was minor, consisting of redecoration and new stays for the windows. Included within the tenders is a reference to a 'balcony for King's visit'. Edward VII and Queen Alexandra visited Glasgow on 14 May 1903 to lay the foundation stone for the Glasgow & West of Scotland Technical College's new building. 1
Authorship: The job book entry is entirely in Mackintosh's hand and from 1898 on Miss Cranston had given him all of her important commissions. In 1896–7 he had designed murals for her Buchanan Street premises, which had been designed by George Washington Browne with interiors by George Walton. 2 The 1903 alterations were carried out concurrently with the remodelling of 217 Sauchiehall Street for the Willow Tea Rooms.
