![]() | M020 Design for tenements, South York Street and Govan StreetAddress: South York Street and Govan Street, GlasgowDate: 1889 Client: Bank of Scotland Authorship: ![]() |
According to John Honeyman & Keppie's records, in September 1889 the firm prepared two alternative designs for two- and three-storey tenement buildings for a site at Govan Street and 'York Street' (presumably South York Street) in the industrial area of Hutchesontown. 1 The client was aparently the Bank of Scotland, the name written at the top of the page. It seems the project was still alive two years later, when copies of a feuing plan were sent to a Mr McLelland, possibly the client's agent. 2 However, the tenements are not mentioned in the office job books, and it is unclear if they were actually built.
Authorship: This is one of over 270 jobs carried out in the office of John Honeyman & Keppie (Honeyman, Keppie & Mackintosh from 1901) during Mackintosh's time there. Mackintosh undoubtedly worked on many of these, but there is no specific evidence for his involvement in this case.
