the building is a tobacco bond (a secure warehouse where goods on which duty is
due are stored) belonging to Glasgow Tobacco Warehouse Co. Ltd. The central and
N. sections, the premises of Arbuckle, Smith & Co. Ltd., contain whisky
bonds. 9
28 March: A devastating fire destroys the building and neighbours to the N., and seriously damages adjacent buildings in Cheapside Street and Warroch Street. Fourteen members of Glasgow Fire Brigade and five of Glasgow Salvage Corps lose their lives. 10
