This large department store in Glasgow's premier shopping street was built in 1889 for Wylie, Hill Robert. It was damaged by fire in 1903 and reconstructed the following year, when an extra storey was added.
Authorship: The architect in 1888–9 and 1903–4 was John Hutchison, though the design is said to have been largely the work of his chief assistant, Andrew Black. 1 Mackintosh was in the final year of his apprenticeship with Hutchison in 1888–9, and according to the later recollections of a near contemporary in the office, he designed plaster capitals for the interior. 2
