Mackintosh designed a French neo-classical-style science and art museum with columned facades, corner pavilions, mansard roofs and extensive sculptural decoration. In 1890 the design was submitted to the British Institution Scholarship fund competition, and in 1891 to the South Kensington Department of Science and Art National Competition, where it was awarded a silver medal.

Authorship: Mackintosh is named as designer in contemporary press reports.
